Zaharom Nain (Rom), Associate Professor of School of Modern Languages & Culture at The 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) has been appointed by the President and Executive Committee of the Malaysian Social Science Association (MSSA) or Persatuan Sains Sosial Malaysia (PSSM) to the post of Vice-President of the Association.

In his capacity as the VP, and together with the President, Professor Mohamad Hazim Shah from Universiti Malaya, Rom is heading the planning of the 8th International Malaysian Studies Conference (MSC8), which will be held in July 2012 at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This biennial international conference is organised by PSSM.

The working proposal for the conference is titled: ‘Transition and Transformation: State, Market and Culture in a Period of Rapid Change’. Since 1997 PSSM has organised the biennial international conference.

The Malaysian Social Science Association (PSSM), the only association of its kind in Malaysia, was formed in 1978, based on a resolution that was passed at the first national social science conference held in Malaysia's national university, UKM, in 1974. Membership of the PSSM, while predominantly academic, is also made up of civil society groups, all united by a common purpose of wanting to explore ways of critically understanding Malaysian society, its peoples, structures and institutions. Aside from organising the MSC every two years, the Association also conducts a variety of social science workshops, mainly for young academics.

UNMC’s School of Modern Languages & Culture offers courses in Modern Languages, Cultural Studies, Media Studies (including Film, Television and Journalism), and Critical Theory. A unique aspect of the degree programmes offered is the compulsory language component which ensures that graduates are fluent in written and spoken language of their choice.
