Ir Dr. Law Chung Lim, Associate Professor from the Department Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) has received the “Young Drying Scientist Award for Excellence in Drying 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ and Development in the Asia-Pacific Region”. This award was conferred to Dr. Law at the 7th Asia Pacific Drying Conference which was held from 18-20 September 2011 in Tianjin, China.

This biennial award is presented to a young scientist in the area of drying who has achieved excellent research and development work in drying science, contributed significantly to education and scholarship, and provided professional services to the drying community.

Drying is a common operation in the processing industry, particularly in food and agricultural products.  In drying, water (or other liquid content) in the material is removed for the preservation of food and to avoid the growth of micro-organisms. Improper drying of a product may lead to spoilage, degradation of quality, and the generation of toxins. Drying science focuses on the understanding of the characteristics of a drying material and the application of proper drying technology to maximise product quality, ensure product safety, optimise energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.

The award was conferred to Dr. Law for his accomplishment in producing significant journal papers, encyclopedia chapters, book chapters and editorial services to the journal Drying Technology. Other key contributing factors included his academic supervision and guidance to postgraduate students,  involvement in the organisation of international events and his contributions to the drying community and learned societies including; Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Institution of Chemical Engineers UK (IChemE) and ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET).

“I attribute the success of this award to UNMC, the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ Centre for Food and Bio-product Processing, the drying research group at UNMC as well as the collaborators from academia and industry partners who have been working with me over the past 13 years,” said Dr. Law.

“I would like to thank my colleagues at the Faculty of Engineering for their support and collaboration, and I will continue to work harder and remain worthy of this award,” Dr. Law added.
