Dr Thomas Barker, Head of the School of Media, Languages and Cultures at 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham Malaysia will be speaking at a forum on writing about films in Southeast Asia on 18 September 2020 at 4:15pm.

Other panellists at the forum are Davide Cazzaro, publisher and editor-in-chief of Nang Magazine; Adrian Jonathan Pasaribu, chief editor and co-founder of film website Cinema Poetica (Indonesia); and Alfonse Chiu, writer, artist and researcher with SINdie (Singapore).

Together, they will discuss the relationship between writing and cinema, both contemporary filmmaking as well as the role for historical research. In line with the Festival’s theme of “Reinventing Southeast Asia”, they will also discuss the ways in which film writing provides a means to understand the region and its diverse histories and cultures.

This forum is part of the annual SeaShorts Film Festival that will run from 12 to 20 September 2020. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the festival will take place entirely online for the first time.

Thomas Barker has written on film and cinema in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Southeast Asian region. He is the author of Indonesian Cinema After the New Order: Going Mainstream (2019) and co-editor of Southeast Asia on Screen: From Independence to Financial Crisis (1945-1998) published by Amsterdam 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ Press in August 2020.
