Internship: International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Malaysia)

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent - Socities Disaster Law and Health Intern

Description:

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) was founded in 1919 in Paris in the aftermath of World War I. The war had shown a need for close cooperation between Red Cross Societies, which, through their humanitarian activities on behalf of prisoners of war and combatants, had attracted millions of volunteers and built a large body of expertise. A devastated Europe could not afford to lose such a resource.

Note:
This internship is aimed at School of Politics, History and International Relations (PHIR) third year and PGT students.

Position background:
The internship is established to support IFRC Disaster Law and Health Teams to undertake a mapping on regional and national regulatory frameworks for health in Asia Pacific. Ultimately this project would provide an evidence base to support  National Societies to  ensure that its auxiliary role in health  is well articulated, understood and reflected in the governance framework of their countries. The intern would be expected to provide research to identify the key  laws and regulations to be examined, as well as provide analysis on Red Cross and Red Crescent national laws in terms of mandated roles in health activities. Drawing on the mapping exercise the intern would  be expected to provide analysis and produce suitable communications/ advocacy material related to the mapping. The duration of the internship will be three (3)-months. 

Key activities of the Disaster Law and Health Intern: 

  1. In consultation with the Regional Emergency Health Coordinator and Disaster Law Coordinator develop a template for the Asia Pacific health and law regional mapping, identifying the key laws, regulations and thematic areas that need to be included and analysed in the mapping.
  2. Undertake regional and national level research on health legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to Red Cross work and populate the regional mapping document with the requisite information. 
  3. On completion of the mapping, work with relevant teams to develop appropriate communications and advocacy material to communicate findings of the research.

Position arrangements

  • The intern will be based in the Asia Pacific Regional office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and also has the option of being home based if preferred.
  • It is suggested that the intern should be working towards an academic qualification in health, public policy, international development or law

Person Specifications for the Disaster Law and Health Intern

Qualifications

  • Working towards a qualification relevant to public health and public policy/law
  • Degree/or advanced training in disaster risk management

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in the international humanitarian and/or development sector
  • Experience in advocacy and influence efforts with strong research, writing and reporting skills
  • Demonstrated experience in project management 
  • Experience with networking and communicating with different stakeholders such as government, Red Cross/Red Crescent, UN, NGOs and other organisations 

Skills/knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of international humanitarian and development system
  • Excellent professional communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Good computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to use own initiative and problem-solving skills 
  • Fluent spoken and written English
