Science Starts Young: UNM Pharmacy Brings Health and Sustainability to Hulu Langat School

Hulu Langat, 27 May – In celebration of its centenary, the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham Malaysia’s School of Pharmacy is expanding its impact beyond the lab, advancing health and environmental education among Malaysia’s youth.
Partnering with SJK (C) BATU 14, which is also celebrating its own centenary, the School of Pharmacy organised a special outreach event focusing on microplastics and their impact on human health. The programme is part of UNM’s broader Sustainable Environmental and Operational Strategy (SEOS), which integrates education, research, and community engagement for long-term positive impact.
Supported by the Rotary Club of Hulu Langat Eco and Noble Gateway Malaysia, the workshop engaged 161 primary school students through hands-on scientific exploration of plastic pollution. The activity encouraged awareness of the link between environmental exposure and public health - a key theme within UNM’s pharmacy education.
“This initiative reflects the heart of our centenary theme – Health, Heritage, and Horizons. It’s about using our scientific knowledge to educate, inspire, and activate young minds to protect their future and our planet,” said Prof. Kang-Nee Ting, the head of the School of Pharmacy.
Advancing Public Understanding Through Science
This initiative exemplifies the School’s mission to make science accessible and relevant, while preparing future health professionals to address real-world challenges. By fostering early interest in health and sustainability, the School of Pharmacy reinforces its role as a regional leader in applied, research-led pharmacy education.
The outreach also aligns with national education goals under the TS25 framework, modelling how universities can partner with schools to build scientific literacy and environmental awareness from an early age.
A Century of Innovation, A Future of Purpose
The outreach programme is part of a broader series of centenary activities at the School of Pharmacy, which include hosting UK MPharm research students at the Malaysia campus and embedding real-world learning into its BPharm curriculum. These efforts reflect the School’s dedication to producing globally competent, socially engaged graduates ready to take on future health challenges.
As both institutions commemorate a century of educational service, this collaboration sets a powerful example of what future-facing education can look like - health-conscious, environmentally aware, and grounded in meaningful community partnerships.
