Lipis, 18 October 2025 — Four Year 2 students from the BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Data Science programme, School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, clinched third place at the Malaysia Data Innovation Talent x DOSM Datathon 2025, a premier national competition co-organised by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and inStats, UiTM Shah Alam. 

The team, aptly named Crashout, consisted of Mohamed Fahd Haris Bin Shaiful, Lim Zi Xiang, Cheng Hsiu Fung, and Arianna binti Ainurizam. They proudly represented the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) as the only private university team to reach both the finals and secure a Top 3 placement. 

Their innovative project, “From Rainfall to Rice: Linking Climate, Agriculture, and Poverty,” explored the intricate links between climate change, agriculture, and poverty using government datasets. The team proposed MyTani, an AI-powered platform designed to connect researchers, companies, and farmers through data-driven insights and climate-smart solutions to strengthen Malaysia’s agricultural resilience. 

This remarkable achievement highlights the students’ analytical expertise, technical proficiency, and communication skills, underscoring UNM’s growing reputation in national-level data science competitions. 

The competition was held in conjunction with National Statistics Day 2025, promoting the importance of data analysis and the use of technological tools in shaping informed decisions. This year’s theme, “Innovative Solutions for a Decent Standard of Living in Malaysia,” drew 93 teams from 24 higher education institutions nationwide, highlighting the growing significance of data innovation in addressing Malaysia’s socio-economic challenges.
