She holds degrees from the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Kent at Brussels School of International Studies (Ph.D.), 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Leiden, Netherlands (MA) and Syracuse 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@, New York (BA). Expertise Summary

Dr. Nur Daut is fascinated by the struggles of various forms of identities such as national, regional, religious and ethnic. Her research examines how contestation over various identities shapes politics at multiple levels. Her regional focus is Southeast Asia with a special emphasis on Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Myanmar. These countries provide numerous cases of identity contestation for analysis - e.g., Islamisation and ethnic nationalism in Malaysia, the Moro Islamic movements in the Philippines and Buddhist nationalism and the Rohingya community in Myanmar - that spill over to impact foreign and security policies.

Dr. Nur's work on identity centres around three areas of inquiry: colonialism and the formation of identities, the domestic-international link and ethnic nationalism in post-colonial societies.

Her current research work focuses on the Indian Muslim diasporas and the construction of "ethnic identities" in Malaysia. This research seeks to illustrate the rift within the ethnic Indian community in Malaysia by analysing the impact of the state-led engineering construction of ethnic "Malay-Muslim identity" on the Indian community in the country. The findings of this research will be incorporated as part of a book chapter that will be published in 2025 by Routledge titled "Diaspora in Peace and Conflict in the Indo-Pacific".

Dr. Nur Daut has taught a number of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They include Asian Regionalism & Economic Development, Politics & Security Issues in East Asia, Comparative politics of Southeast Asia, International Development, Globalization & Identity, Nationalism & Ethnicity, Theories of International Relations and Foreign Policies of Major Powers.
