His research work started off with the interest of propagating plants via in vitro techniques, and later extended to using in vitro technologies as a platform to cryopreserve various non-seed-producing, recalcitrant seed and vegetatively propagated plant species. He had developed several ground breaking technologies in conservation various minor fruits with recalcitrant seeds (unable to be dried and kept in seed bank) including modified encapsulation and vitrification techniques.

In recent years, Joshua had ventured into manipulating the in vitro grown plants and callusses to produce useful secondary metabolites. This requires him to go into phytochemical studies and make comparisons between field grown and in vitro grown plants.

He has also ventured into the incorporation of anaerobic microbes into Microbial Fuel Cell technology to develop self-sustaining technology for wastewater treatment.
