This module is aimed at students who will be undertaking a part-time or full-time work placement or internship during their summer break at university.
This is a spring semester module.
Goals & training
In this module you will need to
- Complete 40 hours of work experience either during vacation or term time, this include:
- voluntary work
- placements
- internships
- all paid employment - Keep a reflective log of the internship
- Submit the Work Experience Journal at the end of the module on your internship
You will be taught how to sell your experience on your CV as well as how to recognise the skills you have developed through your time in the workplace.
Workshops are designed to support you in drawing out key strengths with regard to your employability based upon the skills acquired through your work experience. Work experience in this context refers to paid work or unpaid work experience not related to charitable volunteering or similar.
Topics for training and reflection will include:
- Overview of benefits of work experience
- Identifying transferable skills
- Understanding skills employers seek
- Personal SWOT analysis
- Making good use of portfolios and associated technology.
- Project and action planning
- Skills in reflective learning
- Preparation of CV & understanding application processes.
Please note that we cannot accredit work experience retrospectively so it is important you apply for this module before commencing your work experience. Also, the UNMC Careers Advisory Service team is not responsible for finding you a job or work placement; however, the careers team does regularly advertise a range of work available to current students.
