A Journey to a Fairer Malaysia

Combatting modern-day slavery and supporting environmental conservation to forge a path towards social justice and a fairer future for Malaysia's most vulnerable.

Peel back the layers of complex global supply chains, and you'll eventually uncover hidden stories of human dignity. This is the focus of Dr. Karma Tashi Choedron’s research. Her work is about real-world change and a fairer future for some of the most vulnerable communities in Malaysia.

Unpacking Modern Slavery

Dr. Karma's research courageously delves into the challenging world of modern-day slavery and forced labour, examining its root causes and identifying where people might be exploited. A significant British High Commission project, for instance, saw her team train an impressive 402 individuals from 179 organisations across the manufacturing and oil palm sectors. This was vital in enhancing their ability to detect forced labour, a crucial step forward that even led to the launch of a dedicated online portal for continuous learning.

Furthering this impact, her collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) meticulously explored decent work challenges within Malaysia's critical rubber glove supply chain. Through extensive data collection from various stakeholders, the study pinpointed crucial issues like unfair recruitment practices, excessive working hours, and inadequate living conditions for workers. It also highlighted specific vulnerabilities related to decent work, offering clear suggestions for improved labour standards and compliance with national laws. The study informed policy recommendations and contributed to improved compliance frameworks.

But Dr. Karma’s dedication to social justice doesn't stop there. She and her team journeyed deep into the Southeast Pahang Peat Swamp Forest, working closely with the Orang Asli Jakun community. This collaboration wasn't just about understanding their livelihoods; it was about respecting their deep connection to the land and gathering insights crucial for shaping inclusive environmental conservation strategies.

"Beyond the data and reports, our journey is driven by a deep commitment to social justice—combating modern-day slavery, championing decent work, and supporting environmental conservation to ensure human dignity and a fairer future for all in Malaysia,” said Dr. Karma.

Dr. Karma’s research is driving policy change, advancing ethical practices in industry, and uplifting communities. Her projects have also opened doors for 32 students to gain hands-on experience through internships, strengthening their skills and passion for social justice.
