How Your Personal Tutor Can Help

Every student at UNM is assigned a personal tutor (some will be assigned an academic guide in certain schools/units) - an academic staff member within your school who will provide support to you throughout your studies. You will receive an email from your school once your tutor has been assigned, and you will also find their name listed in NottinghamHub (Campus Solutions).

Regular Touchpoints for Your Success

While meetings are not scheduled on your timetable, you and your tutor are expected to connect at least three times a year. It is the responsibility of your tutor to set up these meetings, but you can arrange additional meetings with your tutor shall the need arises. These check-ins may happen face-to-face or online. You don’t have to face challenges alone. Your personal tutor is there to support you - connecting early means getting the right help sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are all foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and postgraduate research students assigned to tutors?
Yes, for foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate taught students although some of them may be assigned an academic guide instead of a tutor. However, postgraduate research students receive personal and academic support from their supervisor and the Graduate School.
2. Can a student request a change of personal tutor, and what is the process?
A tutee may request a change of personal tutor by contacting the Senior Tutor, provided they have a valid reason. Requests based solely on personal preferences will not be considered valid.
3. Who should I contact if I have questions about personal tutoring?
UNM follows a decentralised approach to personal tutoring. Students (tutees) are encouraged to contact their assigned personal tutor directly, either by email or office phone. Otherwise, students can reach out to the School’s Senior Tutor. In emergencies, students should call the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@’s emergency hotline.
4. How often should students meet with their personal tutor, and are there any recommended check-in points?
While personal tutor meetings are not timetabled, both students (tutees) and their personal tutors are expected to meet or make contact at least three times per academic year. These meetings usually take place at the start, middle, and end of a student’s academic year. In addition, students are encouraged to initiate meetings with their personal tutor as needed, for example, to discuss feedback.
5. What kind of issues can I bring up with my personal tutor
You can talk to your personal tutor about a wide range of academic and personal matters. This includes module choices, progression concerns, pathway options, careers, exam preparation, or general academic advice. They’re also a point of contact if you're facing challenges like stress, family issues, or difficulties with peers or lecturers. They will also guide you to other university support services such as wellbeing, English language support, or careers advice.
