For too long, the immense potential of Malaysia's Orang Asli students has been misunderstood, their distinct ways of learning sometimes mistaken for weakness. Yet, within their communities lies a pool of talent, waiting to be recognised and nurtured. Dr. Suria Selasih Angit's research stands as the catalyst to bring these talents to light through collaborative engagement and co-creation—working together to shape a more inclusive educational system for Orang Asli students.
In a two-year initiative, she, alongside the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), embarked on a journey of profound listening. Through traditional "sharing circles" and photovoice, they immersed themselves in the Orang Asli Temiar community in Kelantan, unearthing their needs and aspirations. Educational programmes that were designed based on these insights were implemented in two schools by partner institutions, including International Islamic 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ Malaysia and Islamic Science 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ Malaysia. The students, despite their initial unfamiliarity with the subject, eventually mastered robotics and achieved wins at national competitions.
This wasn't just about STEM skills; it was about igniting self-belief and proving that with tailored, community-driven support, Orang Asli youth can soar just as high as the urban youth.
In addition to this, much of the rich Orang Asli culture and leadership also remains unknown to the wider world. Dr. Angit is aiming to solve this through ongoing consultancy research for Yayasan Gamuda. Imagine Orang Asli wisdom, once oral traditions, now immortalised in storybooks, penned by the Orang Asli themselves – a powerful act of cultural preservation and shared knowledge.
Through this collaboration, a groundbreaking leadership framework is also being meticulously co-created for Malaysia's Orang Asal – a term embracing all indigenous communities across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Drawing its strength from their unique values, this framework empowers the next generation to lead with pride and authenticity.
“Our projects are driven by a singular, powerful goal: true inclusion. They give Orang Asli communities a vital platform, making their profound perspective of knowledge and living known to all,” Dr. Angit emphasised.
These projects underscore the indispensable power of genuine collaboration – a partnership that respects, empowers, and celebrates the unique brilliance of the Orang Asli, ensuring their rightful place in shaping a more equitable and vibrant future for all.
