“These experiences challenged me to reassess my career aspirations and refine my choice of modules, ensuring I was equipped with relevant skills for the evolving industry landscape”

EWAN KOAY CHIEN LIANG

Mechanical Engineering Student

Ewan Koay Chien Liang is a third-year mechanical engineering student who believes that leadership, collaboration and a deep commitment to driving positive change has shaped his journey into his preferred studying choice.

In 2023, during his first year at the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) as a second-year student, he took on the role of event lead at SEEN (Sustainable Environmental Education Network), where he organised sustainability-themed workshops and markets.

“This experience introduced me to incredible individuals who shared my passion for sustainability, and together, we participated in various local and global competitions.

These opportunities strengthened my leadership skills and broadened my perspective on sustainability, reinforcing my belief that it is essential for humanity's future,” he said.

Building on that foundation, Ewan became a mentor with environmental group Roots and Shoots Malaysia in 2024, using his experience to inspire and motivate fellow youths to engage in sustainability efforts.

He credited UNM for providing a platform for meaningful initiatives, forming valuable connections, and developing a strong foundation in both engineering and sustainability.

Ewan also said the compulsory industrial training programme, various workshops and talks, provided new insights into the Malaysian engineering industry. “These experiences challenged me to reassess my career aspirations and refine my choice of modules, ensuring I was equipped with relevant skills for the evolving industry landscape,” he added.

For Ewan, the most valuable skill learnt in UNM was critical thinking skills developed through the engineering course. “It helped me to solve problems beyond the academic setting by using structured steps to solve any problems.”

Among his high points so far is seeing his app addressing worldwide food waste being exhibited at the EDUTECH ASIA 2024 in the Marina Bay Sands Expo and achieving a top six position in the "Higher Education League" of Google’s Planet Protectors Challenge.

Ewan had one word to describe his university days. “Transformative!”

“My university experience was a journey of self-discovery and growth, shaping not just my career aspirations but also my values and purpose.

Learning about the reality of the Malaysian engineering industry gave me a new perspective - one that led me to reassess my own path and  ensure my skill set aligned with realistic career opportunities,” he said, adding he found meaning in mentorship and volunteering that strengthened his commitment to giving back.

He said UNM was good for those interested in engineering as it has great lecturers, engineering facilities, variety of food options and entertainment spaces.

“With excellent academic resources, a thriving student community, and career support, UNM  provides a comprehensive and dynamic environment for students to grow, learn, and prepare for their future careers,” Ewan said.
