What do you do after graduating with a degree in Law but your passion lies elsewhere? A young Patrick Joseph faced this conundrum about 25 years ago and found himself working as a consultant for an even younger university looking to set up in Malaysia.
His ‘client’ later became his new employer as Patrick found his calling in guiding young people towards a quality education at the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham’s newest city campus in Kuala Lumpur.
From the hustle and bustle of the city centre to laid-back semi-urban setting of Semenyih, Patrick has been ever present as UNM chalked up an impressive number of achievements and recognition.
His passion for educating and guiding young people has grown even stronger as the years passed by.
He recalls with pride the early years when he would have breakfast in the cafeteria with the late Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen Ismail, a Cabinet member who at different stages of his political career held the portfolios for Defence, International Trade and Industry and Foreign Affairs. He was also a graduate of the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham and was appointed as the first Chair of the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@ of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) Board.
“Both of us would sit for hours and discuss growth plans for UNM to chart new paths in building educational excellence,” said Patrick.
The humble demeanor and approachability of that great man inspired Patrick to adopt a similar attitude towards everyone he encounters. Perhaps due to his influence, he is pleased to note that the staff and students of UNM co-exist as one big family, a familial atmosphere that is apparent as one wanders the halls of the vast Semenyih campus.
From the early days of the Malaysian campus when there were only a few hundred students, Patrick has done it all, from arranging tables, setting up classrooms, invigilating exams, enrolling students to organising graduation ceremonies.
He has been hands-on all the time and as a result, he understands how difficult and strenuous these jobs can be. Just like the 188体育网址_188体育在线-【唯一授权网站】@’s aim is to become an institute of choice for students, Patrick is determined it should also be an employer of choice.
